WOOD CONDITIONER: Vermont Natural Coatings Pre-Stain Wood Conditioner is an essential treatment to prepare bare wood for uniform acceptance for Vermont Natural Coatings Stain & Finish. This clear treatment prevents streaks and blotching when staining interior wood projects, and ensures a beautiful, uniform color. It is recommended for use over any wood, but it is especially helpful in preparing soft or porous woods for staining.

Colors on screen or printed out may not be accurate. Actual color will be influenced by the wood you are applying on, number of coats, application method, lighting, and other factors.

Application information:
  • Always test the finish on a sample piece of wood to confirm desired appearance.
  • Apply in the direction of the wood grain, taking care to avoid puddling. Overlap strokes, always maintaining a wet edge. If desired, wipe off excess material within 5 minutes.
  • Finish will be dry and ready to recoat in 2 hours.
  • If a deeper tone is desired, apply additional thin coats. Temperature and humidity may alter dry time.
  • For optimum protection and beauty, topcoat with VNC clear PolyWhey finish.
  • Easy clean-up: brushes and other equipment can be cleaned with warm, soapy water. We recommend using Safecoat SuperClean.
  • Download the Application Instruction Sheet for more details.

PolyWhey is the result of recent scientific innovations using whey proteins--a natural by-product of the dairy industry. This hard-wearing "polymer" wood coating meets the highest professional and environmental standards. Whey, a by-product of cheese making, has a high BOD (biochemical oxygen demand) that can increase the burden on waste treatment facilities and can pollute rivers, lakes, and even the ocean. But over the last decade, this by-product has been used to create valuable products such as high-protein "energy bars", infant formula, and as a film coating for food-safe packaging. By reformulating whey into a durable, natural wood finish, a potential waste product is taken out of the waste stream and put to a useful purpose.
