Protect-A-Coat Lead Encapsulant has been specially engineered to form a remarkably sound and sturdy barrier between lead based paint and the environment. This state-of-the-art, environmentally friendly coating is waterbased, non-toxic, non-flammable and easy to use. It has superior adhesion, and results in an extremely sturdy, yet flexible coating that provides maximum long term protection (20 year warranty). It results in a decorative finish. Protect-A-Coat is cost effective because its 7 mil dry thickness results in twice the coverage of elastomeric encapsulants. It meets the Federal ASTM and HUD standards, as well as state and local regulations (including the tough Massachusetts standard).
Surfaces: Protect-A-Coat is for interior surfaces. It is not intended for certain high contact friction areas such as floors, doors at door contact points, and window sash liners (contact points).
User Guidelines: All applicators of Protect-A-Coat should follow all appropriate guidelines in effect (such as OSHA, NIOSH, EPA, and all other applicable Federal & State Laws and Regulations).
Instructions: Do not thin or apply below 45 °F.
A. Surface Preparation:
- An inspection and adhesion test is recommended to determine if the existing paint is stable and well-adhered. - See X-Cut Adhesion Test
- Apply Protect-A-Coat to a clean, dry, sound and intact surface
- Remove all blistered, peeling, flaking and loose paint with a stiff putty knife and water
- Clean and remove grease, wax, mildew, oil, smoke residues and other contaminants by washing with a detergent and rinsing with clean water
- Repair irregularities with an appropriate patching or joint compound. Prime patches.
- Glossy or highly glossy surfaces must be deglossed with a deglosser
- Prime bare metal with a quality metal primer. Prime water stained or other discolored areas with the appropriate stain blocking primer
- We recommend the use of Back to Nature Lead Clean for use at steps 4 and 6.
CAUTION: Some preparation procedures such as sanding or scraping may create toxic dust and/or hazardous waste. Inhalation (breathing) or ingestion (eating) of lead may cause death or serious illness. Wear protective clothing and OSHA approved respirator during these procedures. Cover floor or ground with disposable materials. Extreme caution should be used to prevent lead chips and dust from entering the environment. Dispose of all waste materials in accordance with all existing Local, State, and Federal Requirements.
B. Application: When finished, Protect-A-Coat is applied at a min. thickness of 7 mils dry resulting in coverage of approx.100 sq. ft. per gallon.
1. Without a fabric mesh or scrim:
(i) We recommended that the final thickness be accomplished by putting on two applications.
a. Apply first coat of encapsulant to the surface at a minimum thickness of 8 - 9 mils wet or 3.5 mils dry (approx. 200 sq. ft. per gal per coat).
b. The product dries to the touch in 2 - 4 hours, and can be recoated in 4 - 12 hours.
c. Apply the second coat to the surface at a minimum thickness of 8-9 mils wet or 3.5 mils dry.
2. With a fabric mesh or scrim:
a. Ascertain the starting point at the center of the surface to be encapsulated with fabric mesh. Insure that first run is vertical.
b. Cut the mesh/scrim fabric longer than the area to be covered. Cut 2 or 3 pieces of fabric to size before application as described below. The application is similar to wallpapering.
c. Apply first coat of encapsulant to the surface at a minimum thickness of 8 - 9 mils wet or approximately 3.5 mils dry. Apply enough encapsulant to hang 2 or 3 strips of material.
d. While encapsulant is wet, embed fabric into encapsulant using plastic wallpaper smoother. Encapsulant should soak through material. Smooth out the fabric to eliminate entrapped air and to insure adhesion. Dry areas should be addressed immediately by applying additional encapsulant over fabric so that it soaks in insuring proper adhesion. Due to quick dry time of Protect-A-Coat, steps should be taken to insure that fabric is embedded while encapsulant is wet. If drying should occur before fabric is installed, reapply initial coat.
e. Repeat steps a through d. Butt fabric at adjoining edges. Trim away excess fabric at wall/ceiling, wall/floor and window/door edges. Trim out at outlet and switch boxes. Remove covers before start of application.
f. The initial coat dries to the touch in 2 to 4 hours, and can be recoated in 4 to 12 hours.
g. Apply a second coat of Protect-A-Coat Encapsulant to the surface at a minimum thickness of 8-9 mils wet or approximately 3.5 mils dry.
3. Protect-A-Coat can be rolled, brushed, or sprayed onto the surface.
(i) Rolled - Use a short or medium size nap on smooth surfaces and longer nap on rough or textured surfaces.
(ii) Brush - Use a professional quality nylon or polyester brush of appropriate size.
